BBC films launch of the new ARTHOUSE Meath products
A film crew from BBC London followed ARTHOUSE Meath to Top Drawer in September. Earlier in the month the BBC had come to meet and film the clients, including Mel Young, Danny O'Sullivan and Peter Andrews, at the Meath Epilepsy Trust in Godalming, Surrey.
The producer had found ARTHOUSE Meath when we were exhibiting at KioskKiosk in August and were interested in how we were bringing the artists' work to the marketplace - “retail therapy” as they put it.
“It’s no longer art therapy but a social enterprise,” said their reporter, Ayshea Buksh. “Designs created by the artists at the Meath Epliepsy Trust are now being put on everyday objects and will be sold across the country... and their designs are already creating a buzz.”
ARTHOUSE Meath manager, Becky Sheraidah said “People with learning difficulties have abilities and there is a future for them as part of something in life, as part of the economy.”

About the ARTHOUSE Meath charity
ARTHOUSE Meath is a charitable enterprise that creates and exhibits artworks for sale in printmaking and painting which celebrate the skills and talents of adults with learning disabilities, many of whom live with severe epilepsy and physical disabilities. ARTHOUSE Meath is part of the Meath Epilepsy Trust in Godalming, Surrey, UK.
Over three million adults across Britain live with learning disabilities. Many feel the work they create is deemed of little value and often considered redundant.
ARTHOUSE Meath highly regards the skills and abilities of all its artists. The work offers an insight to a way of seeing the world, has humour and warmth and will inspire us all.
The freedom of expression and uninhibited mark making of the Art House artists makes for a very desirable, engaging and honest artwork as seen in ‘outsider’, ‘raw’ or ‘naïve’ art forms.
Artists of varying abilities all have the opportunity to work in a safe caring environment creating artworks to be shown and sold at exhibition. Some works, like the seascapes or boat scenes, are created by the artists painting as a group others are by solo artists. The ARTHOUSE Meath studio houses excellent facilities for artists to work in screenprinting, painting and mixed media.
The majority of art house artists experience severe epilepsy. To reduce epileptic seizures for those living with epilepsy, it is important the brain is occupied, enthused and interested. This is part of the service we provide.
We aim to give artists a sense of self-worth, and develop pride and confidence by showing the possibilities of what can be achieved. Money from the work sold goes back into the project for further development and the art house artists all receive incentive payments.
We hope the unique individual artwork will make you smile.
